2023 Awardees

TLN’s 2023 Freedom of the Media Awardees

The TLN Gold Medal for Public Service is awarded to Robert F. Worth, The New York Times Magazine, for his outstanding working promoting human rights during ongoing upheavals in Egypt, Libya, and Yemen.

The TLN Gold Medal for Investigative Reporting is awarded to David Patrikarakos, UnHerd, for his outstanding contribution in coverage of war in Ukraine and successful navigation of complexities of the conflict trench warfare to social media, to use of DIY weaponry created by Ukrainian soldiers, illuminating every facet of a hybrid conflict.

The TLN Freedom of the Media Award for excellence in Explanatory Reporting is awarded to Nacional Weekly & Berislav Jelinić, for two decades of extraordinary journalism leading Croatia’s checks-and-balance reporting and maintaining high standards of journalism in post-socialist, transitional area, to full-fledged democracy.

The TLN Freedom of the Media Award for excellence in International Reporting is awarded to Didi Kirsten Tatlow, Newsweek, for her work over the past year exposing the overt and covert strategies and tactics used by the People’s Republic of China in its contest with the United States and other democracies, highlighting the way the PRC has weaponized democracy’s weaknesses.

The TLN Freedom of the Media Award for excellence in Commentary and Criticism is awarded to Lagipoiva Cherelle Jackson, Associated Press – Samoa, for her outstanding work in advocating for the rights of minority journalists around the world and for developing a climate journalism training program for global south journalists, building partnerships on climate journalism with newsrooms globally.

The TLN Freedom of the Media Award for excellence in Next Generation Journalism Reporting is awarded to Evan Gershkovich, The Wall Street Journal, for his bravery and commitment to responsible journalism for which he is unjustifiably arrested in Moscow during his reporting on Russia’s aggression on Ukraine.
